geography fun-fact of the day: at any given moment, there are 300,000 people in flight over the us. in other words, 0.1 % of the us population is in the air at any given moment. there is a city the size of pittsburgh, pennsylvania up in the sky.
i would like to know the corresponding number for europe, and the rest of the world, but i don’t. but i guess it must be at least twice as high. which would mean that the city in the sky has more inhabitants than my home city of oslo, norway.
and in fact the number i quoted is from a 2002 book, so it is probably a little higher today. i am quoting from:
Urry, John (2006) “Extract from ‘The Tourist Gaze'” in Joanne Morra and Marquard Smith: Visual Culture: Critical Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies, London and New York: Routledge. [The Tourist Gaze came out in 2002].
